Some of the pros of cloth diapering:
1. They are ecofriendly because less waste goes in the landfills
2. They are re-usable for future babies
3. They are easy to use (Exclusively breastfed babies have water soluble poop so it can be washed out in the washer rinse cycle so it's even easier!)
4. Less or no diaper rash issues
5. Less chance of leaking
6. One-size cloth diapers grow with your baby from 7 lbs-35 lbs!
7. Better outcomes during potty training
8. Awesome re-sale value (Yes! you can sell them when you are done if you have taken care of them)
9. They are OH SO Adorable!!
Some of the hesitations of moms that may be thinking about using them (and why it isn't so!):
1. They think they are complicated (they aren't your grandma's rubber pants and diaper pins! My husband does a great job putting these newly designed diapers on our baby!)
2. They don't have time for laundry (You have to do it anyways. It's only 2 extra loads a week [if you have enough cloth to get you through 2-3 days] and you have to spend time shop for diapers anyways so why not spend it at home with your baby while you wait for the washer to do the work...No folding required! Many cloth diapering mommas say "diaper laundry is different than regular laundry")
3. They aren't educated on the benefits of cloth diapers (See above benefits...many don't know disposables are made of plastic and take 500 years to decompose in the landfill.)
4. They think it is easier to use disposables (Many people don't properly dispose of disposable diapers either, you are supposed to put the poop in the toilet anyways before wrapping it up and throwing it away. Feces from landfills get into ground water!)
5. They think their washing machine will get dirty and gross (My washing machine is probably the cleanest it has ever been! Why? Because I have to keep it build-up free so it doesn't ruin my diapers! Meaning I do the recommended vinegar and back soda rinses that washing machines need occassionally. White distilled vinegar is a staple cleaning product for cloth diapers and is a natural antimicrobial cleaner. Natural fibers in some cloth diapers such as bamboo and hemp are also antimicrobial!) I spray my washer after my diaper laundry with vinegar water and let it sit until my next load of laundry! Easy right!?
I've done a lot of research before and during my initial use of cloth diapers and the more I use them the more I fall in love with them! I wish I could swim in all the fluffiness of these cloth diapers and my baby boy is so happy with them too!
My cloth diapering story:
I used disposables during the first few weeks of C's life and between the disposable diapers and the wipes my baby's bottom would bleed and break out. He would get upset when I cleaned him up and I worried that I would never find a solution to these bleeding break outs! I didn't realize it was the disposables wipes that were irritating him until we started using washcloths to clean him and the break outs completely cleared up after a day with cloth! I immediately put him in cloth diapers permanently and we use cloth wipes as well and haven't experienced any irritations again!!!
I can't say enough about cloth and am a big advocate of it! I hope to help new mom's explore the world of cloth diapering. If you have any question for me just post below!
